Al Qaida is Sunni
"Al Qaeda and Shia extremists -- with support from external powers such as Iran -- are on the run but not defeated."
That? That right there? That's what we call conflating disparate ideas. Violently opposed ideas, in fact. That phrase will be... already has been!!.... repeated by your GOP nominee and repeated and repeated, counting on us all to agree that these things go together. That they are functionally the same. That they're okay to say in the same breath as though interchangeable.
The historical pattern of mentioning a sunni group in the same breath as a shia group is as follows:
"Gee those sunni groups sure hate shia groups."
or
"Those shiite guys really killed that sunni guy."
or
"Those sunni guys sure don't like the way white anglo guys talk about them like they're the same as shia guys."
