secret competence
Sometimes people tell me things in great detail about stuff I already know. Or--I assure you it's my favorite thing-- they talk about a topic that I actually have a history and facility with. Like beer. Beer is a big one I run into all the time. People bloviate about their beer knowledge. I mean it runs the full gamut from the heartbreakingly misguided: "it's not a beer, it's an ale;" to the more nuanced but still pedantic variations on "Guinness isn't even the best stout. There's stouts other people make that are just as good, I don't like Guinness because it's just heavily marketed" and "is it a belgian? I love belgian beers. you know, those belgian beers go really great with cheese and here's six reasons why..." I'm a really dedicated beer hobbyist, and I've been at it for many years now. I always have more to learn, but I don't need lectures from people! But I stay silent for any number of reasons, my cultural heritage among them. It should be noted: This complaint and attendant examples does not, to my memory, apply to anyone on my LJ friends list who might be reading this, you vain bitches.
So riddle me this, and post it in your lj:
1. What are five excellent things you know/do really well? How long have you been doing them?
2. How did you learn them?
3. Which ones do you hear the most bs about from tyros?
3. What's your best story about some yayhoo "teaching" you about your secret expertise?
4. Nominate a neologism that describes the experience of "being told shit one already knows"
5. (optional) What trick have you learned to cope?
