$300 to start? what the holy shit do I need an iPhone for, really? mrs_lovett you can be pretty much sure we could forego a laptop, if you want one of these instead. really, what more would you need with a portable internet-enabled device anyway?

Plus between the oncoming Wireless Minneapolis and the normal rhythms of my lifestyle, I don't plan to go anywhere that doesn't have wifi! but those occasions I do, I don't expect to need the full functionality of my iPod in those locations anyway. I'd be out... camping or something, when I'm not going to need a lot of web browsing capability!

Also this: picture the day someone creates a safari-app skype equivalent or somesuch--I mean yeah that would require an enterprising hack for the dock connection to run your own headset--but seriously, I mean, game over. I'm a pretty satisfied AT&T wireless customer, but that don't mean I'm dropping more than $2K (the contract + the hardware) into an iPhone anytime soon.

I don't really get what this does (as we have discussed I don't have time to) but I'm sure it's great.
