Dreamed last week that the new baby came and that it was African American. I was just glad that the baby delivered safely and was healthy but everybody in the room was freaking out. Doctors and nurses were asking "what are you going to do, can't you see this baby's not yours?" and i was like "shut up, we'll deal with that stuff later! don't say that in front of the baby! let's just take care of the baby, do your jobs! let's not talk like that in front of the sweet baby"

I guess in my dreams I'm very compassionate to babies and very sanguine about everything else, no matter how unexpected. Or very good at denial. Let's hope we can make the former a reality. Except for the paternity part. I mean, I firmly believe it's not discriminatory for me to expect, that my wife's baby isn't Black. In any case, if s/he is, let's just wait until after we get home to discuss it, okay?

(raising herewith an ethical question: is it wrong to hope that my baby is white? I argue yes, such a thing is ethically and morally wrong. discuss.)

Hmm...

This actually happened to a friend of mine, a blond, blue-eyed norwegian named Thor, who married his then-pregnant blond, blue-eyed girlfriend who proceeded to poop out a baby that was unmistakably negroid. He flipped, as there was no question of fidelity in his mind until that point. That was a major issue for him.

I don't think it's particularly hoping that the baby is white as much as if it was black, it would be a good significator that you weren't the biological father. The ethics and morality of that are certainly subject to your personal relationship, and it's a pretty complicated subject when you start to consider the legal ramifications of child support, custody, parental rights and the like. Just watch Judge Judy sometime.

Then again, it might be some inner part of you that considers that a black child-- even one that is majority white-- is at a social disadvantage in a number of ways. That is a societal evil that is less pronounced than it used to be but still exists.

Congratulations JO! I didn't know you were having another. I hope your baby is Scandoid instead of, um, Negroid. Even so I suppose your wife may have been knocked up by Thor himself, and you might not know ever know it since You People all look same. But I don't think your wife is like that. Email me sometime.
