I'm rediscovering the joy of single espresso, unadorned. I've ordered single shots twice in the last couple days and it's been a bit revelatory for me. I like the intensity and variations of the flavors. Also, it's a great way to keep from drinking "too much" coffee. If you have 1-2 ounces (and remember there's less caffeine in espresso than in a cup of regular joe, really) it's hard to get all jittery. I'm still in the discovery phase, not sophisticated enough to know in advance what flavors I can expect out of a really great espresso shot, but I'll discover it eventually. For a parallel example, I know my beer styles really quite well so I have reasonable expectations of what "should" be there when I'm about to drink a beer of a particular style and I am on the lookout for outstanding examples or unusual/exemplary ways in which a brewer expresses the characteristics of beer style in a particular offering. I'm not there with coffee or espresso quite yet: I'm in the phase of "I don't know art, but I know what I like" which is what I think the person who said that sort of meant. Once I've gotten a good handle on it, combined with "knowing what I like", I think I'm really going to have fun.
