What we are fighting against are christian nationalists. Dominionists. Children of the Christian Reconstructionist movement. You need to be fighting against them too.

Now, some of you may not feel comfortable about my brand of Christianity, and wouldn't love looking that in the face day after day, and you aren't comfortable with the Christianity of a lot of your friends. But the thing is, the key difference, the fundamental difference, as it were, is that I can live with that--and so can a lot of those other Christian friends I'm referring to. Dominionists cannot live with that. Their "theonomy" cannot and shall not abide religious deviance. Their numbers are growing and their power is growing.

The reason I'm back at seminary is partly to arm myself for the fight. To most of you, dominionism is bad civics. It's far far worse theology. It's the Babylonian captivity. It's the antichrist. Yes, I just called the religious right the antichrist. (Lutherans have a long history of spotting and naming antichrists in our midst.) So I'm going to take on the enemy along part of the theological front.

SO. Either you join us on the civic front and we fight this together. Or we lose, and we plan for our children to become victims or refugees.

I admit, in a small corner of my story-writing brain, where William Gibson hangs out with Heinlein and Isabel Allende, there's a certain appeal to the thought of my great grandchildren launching a new post-American diaspora, washing up on the shores of Siberia, Japan or India, working the rugged terrain of Brazil and Kyrgyzstan. Begging for succor, establishing our little enclaves of culture, a new minority that transforms our own souls to remember at last the kinship we lost when we became the dominators of Amerikkka. But I admit I'd like that to remain the stuff of science fiction, and fix what's wrong with right here and now. And what's wrong with it is the dominion movement.
