Childhood's End
Aug. 23rd, 2005 10:39 am(really ought to reread that book, it's been 15 years).
In less than one hour, we're joining the, uh, ownership society. Most of the money we're bringing to closing this morning will pay the rest of the year's taxes on the house. Weird. Tres weird. It's a big leap into a vast unknown (will the roof hold? will the foundation hold? we change the storm windows? is the yard big enough? the neighborhood safe enough? will we have enough people for the move? what are the monthly payments going to be? will we really build the brick oven and pergola? do we want a garden? will the porch be useable? will the important things get fixed right away? will we kill all the spiders? will there be pie?).
But most of all, will our property values rise and can we keep our elected officials from over taxing us? Because dammit, low taxes and capital gains are now the most important political value we or anyone else can ever promote!
