big smoke rising over the unfrozen river the reflections there are hiding from me sun break through sun break through and pour me away red light behind my eyes the future of white travel zips by young men in dark hoods robes monks with gloves and sunglasses my heart broken open at both ends blood lusty and pumping o God you can't take them like that because I love them all those people all those lovelies o lose me loose me won't you come and make my day again yellow streamers die upon the parapets the wind has left us whereever did it go and can we follow her money's on the bad man the naked man the bigfisted tall man with the eyes all aglow the flash of history in every drop upon his brow my heart stung but not dying my voice split but not lying my memory of pines and snowmelt rivers over black basalt too cold to taste just pushing into the space behind my eyes a mind for great gouts of cloud like gods' blood on the hilltops fog tumbling down like viscera just keep driving punch through it there's sun on the other side golden and liquid running ahead of us in great gleaming streams no like thunderous yellow herds the rays like bison diving over the cliffs but undying great flood of hooves precious and heavy a heartbeat like moonrise like mounds of snow collapsing through branches the only sound in the forest sweetly sifting to the ground every step a crunch of tomorrow every movement a raggedy dance in the face of time we jump from instant to instant we are the life lived in peripheral vision our own known only by the other we eat the sound of the snowfall we drink the memory of sunrise we push bodies together into history we are thawed and rising your face so fantastick like a story a firelit ritual right there between your cheekbones your great voice is the opening of the curtain and swell of hot lights and hush of the crowd we remember each other in our movements but our blood beats together I'm sorry I know I'm sorry I know O heavy reflections you've weighted my eyes O cold water you've taken the taste right out of my mouth you've pulled me upriver and I feel my self forgetting out here where the lights turn into discrete droplets along the highways this one a life and this one a life and each one hesitates just a moment while we rush by ponders itself perhaps plans to jump away leap unmoored into the countryside and limn our heads with fire the land gives way and this life is just a thin tissue of small victories little threaded hopes and memories my heart to your heart knotworks of woven nostalgias warm taste of fired earth sweeter and sweeter in our mouths the ache settles onto our teeth a pull of muscles in our jaws the growls of pain in our throats the fall of the moon out of its great high court down to us We are horizon We are out of reach fingers in the air fine gray branches against the widening sky come on spring come on you can't hide in those roots forever you can't cover the light it wants to reflect to smelt new shadows upon the earth dance delirious out from great mirrors and set fire to our ears echoes off the river who first sees the blue of the sky first before any of us can even shake loose and remember it out of our bones and sing where there's fire there must soon be smoke
