After re-watching the premier of Kitchen Confidential last night, I've concluded something: I like TV. TV is kind of "my thing." I'm not like a true TV geek or whatever, though I am a little; but right now, I'm into television. I like the medium, I like the shows I watch and I get to watch a lot of likable shows every week... The price to your brain is high in terms of admitting advertising poisons into your subconscious, but right now there's some pretty amazing quality TV out there that you simply don't have to pay for! That kinda kicks ass.

I mean, for a moment fuck all that stuff about "the opiate of the masses" and how it pollutes my brain. I KNOW all that stuff. I'm just sayin', I actually think I can comment critically on television, and have something relevant to say about it, and maybe help others make sense of it. You know, in much the same way some of my friends are good at talking about movies or have a public passion for the movies ([livejournal.com profile] petsnakereggie comes to mind with his fine work at cinemaphilia).

I'm not good at talking about movies! I can talk a good line of bullshit about movies, but really my interest in movies and my awareness of movies as an important media only dates back to 1994*. Whereas I've been watching TV since the early 1970s. Shoot, I remember watching tv in black and white. I recognize people from commercials (I drive [livejournal.com profile] mrs_lovett nuts with this one!) and I make connections between shows and themes n' shit.

I don't know what I'll actually DO about this, but I'm probably going to be a lot less apologetic about watching TV (watch out!). Oh, and Tivo. I want to buy a Tivo.

([livejournal.com profile] mrs_lovett I'm too susceptible about cable right now, what with the methocarbamol and all, please don't take advantage of me!)

TiVo is the way to go - watching TV without it is terrible once you've used it for a while. Skipping ads, watching shows on your own schedule, no tapes to deal with... But I run [livejournal.com profile] tivolovers so I may be a wee bit biased. :-)
