Help Stall Apocalypse
Mar. 16th, 2006 01:17 pmSo we now have a health savings account (HSA) type of health plan. For a family that almost never goes to the doctor for anything, this is a fairly good idea. We can save money on premiums while also literally saving money in a bank account. It's a nice little trick. For the more adventurous out there, it's also legal to use the money in an HSA as the foundation for a brokerage account. That's right, you can save up to $5000 a year ($10,000 for families) for health care expenses, and it rolls over from year to year. And when your money isn't being drawn on for those needs, you can use that money to build wealth in a mutual fund or just piss it away day trading.
In any case, I've been thinking: that's it, that's how they're going to "save" the "economy." The housing bubble is fit to burst, gas prices are outrageous and the giant banking conglomerates have to get their dough somehow. So they convince us to invest the money in our HSAs, to "set it free to earn more money" or somesuch. They couldn't get the social security wealth transfer thing done with the spineless lilylivered Christianist biblethumping homophobic cokehead card carrying member of the junior fascist association MBA running our country and Iraq's into the ground, so now they're moving to plan B, and they sell it to us with the carrot of an account to call our own and the stick of not paying quite as much per paycheck for premiums we hesitate to use so we can keep growing the nest egg.
And that's from somebody who enthusiastically changed over to an HSA this year.
