Today is O-Bon in Japan. "According to Buddhist beliefs, the dead revisit earth during this period, so lanterns are lit for their souls."
I have not lit a lantern yet today.
I imagine the soundless gestures of the dead, some with great horror on their faces, some with joy. They gather in the out of the way corners, just noticeable at the periphery. Or perhaps they line up outside our windows, just checking to see if we have lit something for them. Imagine me, years from now, dead and restless. Whom shall I haunt if not you?
O give me slippery spiraled stone streets, and great greenery, light at long angles. I will float eagerly from well lit corner to empty wall, seeking your lantern. I long to pass my ghostly fingers through your flames, and to see all my memories laid out in the dusk, forgotten beneath the great drift of continents and generations.
