Did you see Futurama last night, when Bender was shot out accidentally into space, and "becomes" a god to little beings that live on him? He blows it. Then he meets what might or might not be God, a sentient supernova, who says that it's a tricky business being God. If you're too active, people get dependent. If you're not active enough, they don't believe in you at all. The trick is to strike a balance where the people are never quite sure if it's God doing the work or not.
